2023 MLK Visual Art Contest

The Prince William County Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.(PWCAC-DST, Inc.) is pleased to introduce the MLK Visual Arts Contest for students in grades 4 – 12. All entries must be an original visual art mixed media that clearly reflects the theme:


A View of the Promised Land


The winners will be recognized at the MLK Drum Major Award Ceremony on January 29, 2023, 7:00pm, at Gainesville High School, 13150 University Blvd. Gainesville, VA 20155.


Requirements: All entries must be an original visual art mixed media that clearly reflects the theme: A View of the Promised Land. For students in grades 4 – 12 in Prince William County, Manassas City, and Manassas Park area schools.


Submission Period: November 21, 2022 – January 21, 2023

Submission Deadline: January 21, 2023

Event Award Date/Time: January 29, 2023 – 7:00pm

Event Location: Gainesville High School



Selection: Twenty-eight winners representing the 28 days in February (Black History Month) will be selected by a panel of judges from each category.

o Group 1 – 4th - 5th grade (8 winners)

o Group 2 – Middle School – 6th – 8th grade (10 winners)

o Group 3 – High School – 9th – 12th grade (10 winners)


Awards: PWCAC-DST, Inc. will award the winners in each category as follows:

o The top winner from each group will receive a cash prize and certificate of participation.

o The top twenty-eight winners ‘entries will be displayed at the Open Space Art Gallery during the month of February.

o Each participant will receive a certificate of participation.


Award Ceremony: The award ceremony will take place in-person on January 29, 2023, Gainesville High School at 7:00pm. Snow date is February 5, 2023.



RULES AND ENTRY FORM


Describing Submissions: Dimensions must always be in the following order: Height; Width; Depth Example for portrait - 48"x36"x1.5"/ "HxW"xD". Example for landscape - 36"x48"x1.5"/ "HxWxD". Please provide 3-5 sentences to describe your entry. Students may choose one entry from the following:

  • Main Gallery Entries (Large pieces; minimum of 320 square inches)

  • Medium Works Entries (Medium pieces, 80 to 144 square inches)

  • Small Works Gallery (Small to Miniature pieces, maximum of 64 square inches)


Image Submission: All entries will be selected from digital images submitted on-line. Please submit ONE image for each of your entries. Your submission should include properly produced and labeled image files. Only digital images will be accepted for consideration. Submit your image here at this link:


Image Requirements: Accepted file formats for images are JPEG, JPG. Images should be formatted so the longest side is set at minimum 1920 pixels and the resolution is at minimum 72 dpi. Please save images at the highest quality setting to ensure clear viewing of your work.


Member Support for Submissions: If you have questions about submission criteria or how to process your materials, images, etc. to participate in this contest, please reach out to the Arts Recreation Specialist by email to provide support or connect you with staff members who can provide the support you need.


Guidelines and Policies: Submission of an entry form shall constitute complete agreement on the part of the Artist to the terms and conditions set forth.


PWCAC Policies: Accepted artists grant permission for Prince William County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Prince William Arts Council and its affiliates to use images of their work for promotional purposes. By submitting artwork, it is understood as an agreement to this project and the Arts Council of Prince William County, will abide by its policies and procedures.
